From toy stores to television programming, diversity in everyday entertainment didn't start improving until the last 25 years. And not all of the changes have been long-term. Here's a look at some milestones and setbacks since 1980:

• 1980: The first black and Hispanic Barbie dolls are introduced, 21 years after Barbie first hit toy stores.
  
• 1981: Singer and actress Whitney Houston, posing with a white model, is the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine. In 1995, singer Brandy appears alone on the magazine cover.
  
• 1986: Oprah Winfrey becomes the first black woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show.
  
• 1988: Almost 30 years after Barbie is born, Mattel debuts Teresa, Barbie's Hispanic friend. Two years later, Lia, an Asian friend of Barbie's, hits toy stores.
  
• 1989: The first rap Grammy is awarded to DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince Will Smith for "Parents Just Don't Understand."
  
• 1992: Model Veronica Webb is the first black woman to receive a cosmetics contract with Revlon.
  
• 1994: "All-American Girl" is the tube's first all-Asian sitcom, starring comedian Margaret Cho. The show lasts less than a year.
  
• 2000: Nick Jr.'s cartoon heroine "Dora the Explorer" starts leading viewers on adventures in English and Spanish.
  
• 2000: Asian-American consumers feel slighted when "Barbie for President" sells only black, Hispanic and white dolls.
  
• 2000: The Latin Grammys are created to honor the best in Latin music.
  
• 2002: Actress Halle Berry is the first black woman to win the Academy Award for best actress. African-American actor Denzel Washington also wins for best actor.
