Educational Technology Vision

The East Orange School District and the Educational Technology Department of Whitney E. Houston Academy envisions a tomorrow where:

*   All students have unhindered access to Internet, networked resources and distance learning.
*   Teachers and students use technology to create, develop ideas, conduct research, process information, articulate learning, and practice skills.
*   Highly motivated teachers and administrators overcome limitations and fears related to technological change.
*   Administrators, teachers, students and families apply technology and information literacy to accomplish professional, academic, and intellectual goals and objectives.

At every grade level, students receive specialized instruction in the fields of art, music, dance, creative writing, and theater/drama.Also, these subjects are infused into the basic academic curriculum in ways that motivate and reinforce the acquisition of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies concepts. Students with exceptional abilities and keen interest in the arts are invited to participate in "super star" projects in the form of extended-day activities, i.e., clubs, exhibits, and performances.  Such activities broaden and enrich students' learning, hone their talents, and provide showcase performance opportunities.Self-esteem, communication skills, career awareness and critical thinking/problem solving abilities are enhanced as a result of immersion in the creative and artistic processes found in this arts-centered academy. The creative and performing arts theme is embraced by our school community because we believe that knowledge of the arts enhances the quality of life for our students, staff, parents, and community members. Each day an enthusiastic group of specialists provides instruction in the following creative and performing arts areas:

The Dance Strand
provides knowledge and literacy in the field of dance that enhances understanding of dance in relation to music sounds and silence. This understanding enables students to participate in dance activities according to their abilities and training.

This strand emphasizes the use of the body to feel and express various styles of dance for self-expression. It focuses on developing kinesthetic, aesthetic, and evaluative skills. Also it emphasizes the historical, social and cultural influences that have shaped this art form over the years.Included are modern dance, tap, ballet and ethnic dance works, and to evaluate the merits of their work and the work of others.

The Visual Arts Strand
develops skills in understanding and applying art media and art techniques. Students are taught to understand visual arts in relation to histories and cultures, to create and design original works, and to evaluate the merits of their work and the work of others. In relation to the performing arts, the visual arts strand allows students to create stage sets, design program covers and create costume ideas.

The Drama/Theater Strand
provides experiences for developing skills in speech, acting, voice projection and other aspects of expressive communication.Script writing and improvisations based on personal experiences, heritage, imagination, literature and   history   are   encouraged.   Also, students are helped to evaluate and interpret the performances to which they are exposed.

The Music Strand
encourages students to compose original works, read music, sing alone and with others, listen to and analyze music, and to evaluate musical performances. Choral music and musical theater provide stage opportunities for students and serve as community outreach projects as well.

Creative Writing
is a component of the America's Choice WSR Model. It provides opportunities for students to write stories, poems, essays, and plays based on sound writing principles, group brainstorming activities, and the shaping of students' natural writing abilities.
