Whitney Houston becomes AT&T's "True Voice" for TV ads

NEW YORK -- International superstar Whitney Houston will be the featured performer in new television commercials for the nationwide introduction of AT&T TrueVoice, the new generation of sound quality available exclusively with AT&T long-distance service.

The five-time Grammy Award winner appeared at a news conference today in New York with Joseph P. Nacchio, president of AT&T's consumer long distance unit, to announce the one-year agreement.

"Whitney Houston personifies the clearer, closer sound quality of AT&T TrueVoice," Nacchio said. "It's a perfect match for our customers to understand the best sound quality ever achieved on a long-distance network."

Nacchio said AT&T conducted extensive research with MCI, Sprint and its own customers to assess their reactions to AT&T TrueVoice on long-distance calls in the United States and calls to Canada. Four out of five people surveyed preferred the sound quality of AT&T TrueVoice to normal long-distance sound quality.

"AT&T TrueVoice does for consumers what the digital compact disc did for the people who listen to music," Nacchio said.

He said 60 percent of AT&T's consumers in the United States have TrueVoice. "By September, we'll have 75 percent with essentially 100 percent coverage by year end," Nacchio said.

The AT&T TrueVoice enhancement is available automatically to AT&T consumers for calls within the United States and for calls to Canada and Mexico.

Since entering the commercial music scene in 1985, Whitney Houston has surged to the top of her profession on an enviable record of success, with her first three albums for Arista Records selling a total of 40 million copies worldwide. The soundtrack for The Bodyguard, in which she starred, has sold more than 28 million copies worldwide.

Houston is the only recording artist to have seven consecutive number one hits, surpassing The Beatles and the BeeGees. This year alone, she has received three Grammys, eight American Music Awards, 11 Billboard Music Awards, five World Music Awards, five Image Awards from the N.A.A.C.P, and two Soul Train Music Awards.

Whitney Houston In Deal With AT&T

The AT&T Corporation, like other telecommunications marketers, is building a campaign around a celebrity.

AT&T said yesterday that the singer Whitney Houston had been signed to sing in at least two television commercials, as well as to be the new voice for all of AT&T's "True Voice" commercials promoting the sound quality of its connections. Jon Mellor, a spokesman for AT&T in Basking Ridge, N.J., said Ms. Houston "captures the emotion that consumers associate with long-distance calling."

Mr. Mellor demurred at a suggestion AT&T was adopting a strategy used by its competitors, like Sprint, which features the actress Candice Bergen, and MCI Communications, which uses the comedians David Spade and Calvert DeForrest, best known for his character Larry (Bud) Melman.
