Whitney Rocks the World Music Awards

September 16, 2004
Vocal diva WHITNEY HOUSTON brought the house down at the World Music Awards in Las Vegas, performing as a tribute to her mentor and industry father, music mogul/producer CLIVE DAVIS.

Tonight on ET, get all the highlights and surprises from the WMA's!

While Whitney took everyone's breath away with a strong voice and a refreshed look, JENNIFER LOPEZ watched new husband MARC ANTHONY perform. ET caught the newlyweds arriving together at a backstage entrance!

In the accolades arena, USHER was king, earning three WMAs, including the World's Best Artist. NORAH JONES picked up the statuette for World's Best Female Artist, while Best Pop Group went to OUTKAST.

CELINE DION scored the Diamond Award, and Whitney honored CLIVE DAVIS with the Outstanding Contribution to the Music Industry Award.

In 1994, Whitney received the Legend Award in recognition of her global success and outstanding contributions to the music industry. The WMA's are presented annually to the world's top-selling recording artists in various countries around the globe -- an honor determined solely by record sales and, ultimately, the fans.

Earlier, ET's own MARK STEINES caught up with Whitney and Clive for a revealing, exclusive interview!

"I'm more relaxed now," Whitney told Mark. "I'm an older girl now."

Looking gorgeous and healthy, with just one glimpse you can tell that Whitney's back. But whatever you do, don't call it a comeback!

"To me, I never went anywhere," says Whitney. "I decided to take my time and live my life and raise my daughter. To my family, I have never gone anywhere; they hear me all the time."

Whitney and Clive also made a major announcement just to ET: the pair are going back to the recording studio to create an all-new album! "We are going to make records again," said Whitney. "Yeah! It's like a new beginning. Like a plateau."

"He's like my dad in a lot of ways," said Whitney about Clive, the man who discovered her more than two decades ago. "I call him my industry father. He's guided me through my career."

"Is Whitney independent? Does she have a strong will? Is she her own personality? Without question," said Clive. "We have an unbelievable chemistry."

Now, Whitney's pipes are rarin' to go and she's ready to perform.

"Ooh, I am gonna make some noise," she says. "I just think about me and the best that I can be. I can't live up to everybody's expectations but my own."

Watch ET tonight for highlights from the World Music Awards!

Whitney Houston stuns!Whitney Back On Form
Whitney Houston proved she's back on top of her game when she performed at the World Music Awards.

Curvy and flushed with colour, Whitney belted out her hits to an appreciative crowd.

When the singer - who admits to having used cocaine in the past - made an appearance at Michael Jackson's 2002 concert, her stick-thin, gaunt appearance triggered gasps from the crowd.

And when she failed to show up for another concert three days later, the rumour flew about that she was dead.

Now she's cleaned up her act, she's reuniting with producer Clive Davis, who discovered her, to begin work on her seventh album.

For the first time, the world music awards show was broadcast from the United States, after previously being held in Monaco.

Jennifer Lopez took a back seat to new husband Marc Anthony, watching proudly from the audience as he performed.

And Usher proved he's the world's best male singer, winning three awards - and taking the opportunity to chat up Pamela Anderson.

"So, Pamela, I don't mean to start any rumours, but I'm single," Usher joked as the Baywatch babe presented him with his first award.
