Bacharach on Vocals
The songwriter spotlights examples of great singing talent

終於有一些惠妮相關的新聞可以報導了!這是今天的華爾街日報,一個跟惠妮很難扯上關係的專業大報。Burt Bacharach ,這位曾經為許多老天后譜出無數經典作品(如 Walk On By, I Say A Little Prayers For You...

Songwriter Burt Bacharach has provided hits for singers like Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield with songs like "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer" and "The Look of Love." On Nov. 1, he will release "At This Time," his first solo album since 1979, which includes the first lyrics the composer has penned (lyricist Hal David and others wrote the words to Mr. Bacharach's classic songs) and has an unexpected political focus. "All my life I've written love songs," Mr. Bacharach says. But recently, he says, he "began feeling more upset about what was going on in the world." Some songs on the album feature Mr. Bacharach's own singing, another departure. Here, he picks five recordings that showcase some of his favorite vocal performances.

Michael McDonald, the Doobie Brothers
'What a Fool Believes' on 'Minute by Minute' (Warner Bros., 1978)

Michael McDonald sings lead vocals on the Doobie Brothers' 1978 hit "What a Fool Believes." "He has so much soul," Mr. Bacharach says. "In this song, you hear that he has a upper range in his voice that's lovely but you also hear that he has a huskiness."

Philip Bailey and Maurice White, Earth, Wind & Fire
'After the Love Has Gone' on 'I Am' (Sony, 1979)

"Philip is up there in the stratosphere. He's singing with that high falsetto and Maurice is singing at a lower octave," Mr. Bacharach says of this 1979 Earth, Wind & Fire song. " I don't know what they did in the studio -- if they stacked the vocals -- but what you hear is the effect, and it's brilliant."

Diana Ross
'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' on 'Diana Ross' (Motown, 1970)

"This is one of the best performances she ever did," Mr. Bacharach says. "I hear her sing 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' and it makes me smile."

The Temptations
'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' on 'Gold' (Motown, 2002)

This comeback hit was originally released on the 1972 album "All Directions." "There was magic in that studio. It's one of the greatest performances by the Temptations," Mr. Bacharach says.

Whitney Houston
'Greatest Love of All' on 'Whitney Houston' (Arista, 1985)

"She is one of the true great singers," Mr. Bacharach says of Ms. Houston. "No matter how good the voice -- you can have Barbra Streisand singing this song and it not be a great song. Whitney sings it with genuine conviction."

順道回顧一下惠妮心中永遠的痛 (她在Diane Sawyer的訪談中坦承: I was fired!) - 2000年奧斯卡獎彩排現場精彩畫面:在場者形容:She was totaly out of it. 甚至連 Somewhere Out There 這樣經典的歌詞都記不得。
