Whitney Houston: How Will We Know That She Really Loves Us?

The whispers were everywhere: Looks like her . . . No it can't be . . . It's gotta be . . . Yes, it's her!

The excitement intensified as some thirty pairs of eyes at the hotel's bar quickly shifted to the beach, its sand rendered more gloriously white by the blazing Tuesday afternoon sun.

The object of interest, tall, slender and brown-skinned, was now navigating a maze of blue and white lounge chairs, most of them supporting pale oiled-up bodies that brought to mind chickens roasting on a spit.

She wore dark—no doubt, designer—sunglasses that seemed to engulf her slender face, reminiscent of Zsa Zsa Gabor. Scratch that, she reminded more specifically of Dorothy Dandridge, near the end.

“That's Whitney Houston!” Finally someone had said it. Breaths were bated, everyone waited to catch her next move. Her star feet tested the water as the waves lapped gently onto the shore, then she carefully moved in, deeper and deeper, until the water was up to her miniscule waist.

Houston was soon joined by her husband Bobby Brown. They held hands. She played with his corn-rowed hair, like a schoolgirl with a major crush. The bar-folk continued to stare as the couple played tag. As Bobby drew in closer Whitney ran out of the water, her slim shoulders, highlighted by a baby-pink tank top, swayed to and fro, moving with the rest of her pink-bikinied lower body, over which she wore a black beaded beach wrap. Suddenly she tilted her head and laughed.

This was not the on-the-rocks Bobby and Whitney of tabloid fame. They seemed more like newlyweds than a couple who for 12 years had been in a tumultuous headline-making marriage. Then again, the Caribbean has always been famous for its ability to lift spirits!

Viewed from a distance as she ran along the beach Houston could easily have passed for that model-like 22-year-old with the velvet voice that Arista Records' Clive Davis had discovered almost 20 years ago. Who could forget how she stole the heart of the world with songs like Saving All My Love For You, You Give Good Love, How Will I Know—to name a few of her international hits. But with the ups of fame also come the downs, it seems. The media gobbled up stories of Houston's rumored drug abuse. The latest on Houston was that she had checked herself into a drug rehab center just months ago. Could a vacation in Simply Beautiful St Lucia be part of that rehab?

Whitney reportedly arrived on the island just before Christmas. She had hinted at her travelling plans to an Atlanta radio station, expressing a desire to spend Christmas in St Lucia with her family.

The gossip started almost as soon as she arrived—bodyguards in tow—reportedly only with her daughter. “Where was Bobby?” The question was on everyone's lips. He showed up days later. Meanwhile, there have been other unconfirmed stories about the Diva's visit: rumors about her demands when it came to her accommodation, rumors about how she had yelled at her daughter in the hotel lobby when the 11-year-old asked: “Where's Daddy?”

At least one hotel maid talked of arguments soon after Brown arrived. One hotel worker even recalled Houston storming out at one point.

Then there are those who claim to have witnessed the couple's softer side: the hugs, the fatherly kisses on Whitney's forehead.

Everyone was eager to tell of their “15 minutes”—good or bad—with the famed couple.

By Claudia Edward's account, Bobby Brown had been “very nice.” On Tuesday evening The Diva had belted out a few notes with the man who gave us such hits as My Prerogative, Every Little Step and Humpin' Around. Local band “Raw Element” still have not come down to earth following Brown's request to join them for a half-hour session.

“We felt very comfortable with him,” Edward told the STAR. “He didn't act like one would expect superstars to act.”
As for their own impressions of their stay in St Lucia the famous couple, according to our sources, are quite happy and plan to make regular return visits. (Hear that Hilary Modeste?)

With all the talk about their real reasons for coming here, the general sentiment is that the couple is just trying to have some time away from the pesky international paparazzi.
